What is the tradition of Henna Night?
Traditional wedding ceremonies in Turkey are composed of a series of ceremonies mostly celebrated together by the families of both sides but sometimes also taking place at the houses of the bride or the groom. Henna Night (“Kina Gecesi” in Turkish) is a special gathering for the bride, her family, and her friends a day before the wedding day.
In the Henna ceremony, the bride enters the room veiled and sits in the middle of the gathering as a sad story is sung about a young woman who leaves her family to live with her husband. Henna Night is a warm farewell to the bride’s own family and the home she grew up in but also a welcoming gesture for her as she is about to be part of a new family. After the ceremony, the guest enjoy the night with folk dances, music, and delicious food.
